Google DeepMind x Lovegrove Studio x Modem

This collaboration between Google DeepMind, Lovegrove Studio and Modem charts a new frontier in human–AI co-creation. Led on design and AI strategy by Ila Colombo from Lovegrove Studio, the project extends the studio’s legacy of organic, high-performance form into an environment where language, curiosity and machine capability merge. The team began by prioritising the navigation of design vocabulary and descriptive natural-language inputs to filter noise and generate outputs aligned with Lovegrove Studio’s aesthetic principles. Through careful coding and grouping of language, they built associations between key terms and emerging concept seeds, curating valid design directions and distinguishing those relevant for proportions, structure and features. From this semantic groundwork, selected concept seeds were refined through an iterative human–AI prompting process, including exercises that deliberately avoided conventional labels to stimulate richer exploration of form and semantics. This disciplined, curiosity-driven approach allowed the model to be guided rather than left to wander, producing outputs that reflected the studio’s design intent while revealing unexpected possibilities. The refined outputs were then transformed into a complete 3D silhouette and CAD model, followed by slicing and subdivision for direct robotic-arm 3D printing. This printing strategy was engineered to achieve the longest continuous range of arm flow with the fewest parts, pioneering a unique approach to anti-gravity metal deposition and establishing new benchmarks for continuous spans. The result is both a striking physical object and a living case study in how human insight and machine intelligence can feed each other’s growth, a model for a new era of curiosity-driven, ethically grounded design innovation.
